The 2024 Malawi Demographic and Health Survey (MDHS) provides nationally representative data on population and health indicators, continuing a series of surveys conducted since 1992. Led by the National Statistical Office, in collaboration with the Ministry of Health and the Public Health Institute of Malawi, the survey was supported by USAID, the Government of Malawi, UNHCR, and a broad coalition of international partners.
The 2024 MDHS provides sex-disaggregated data across major areas of population health, including reproductive and maternal health, child well-being, nutrition, infectious diseases, gender dynamics, and household living conditions.
In addition to the national sample, a dedicated data collection effort was undertaken in the Dzaleka refugee camp, where field teams engaged with the refugee population. The results for Dzaleka, which are presented in Appendix D of the report, offer a focused snapshot of health and well-being in the camp.
The 2024 MDHS strengthens Malawi’s evidence base and supports government and partners in shaping policies and programs that advance population health and development.
