The Refugee Health Status Report, based on the 2022 Uganda Demographic and Health Survey (UDHS), provides representative data on the living conditions and health outcomes of refugees in Uganda.
Uganda hosts the largest refugee population in Africa, with most refugees coming from South Sudan, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Somalia, and Burundi. The integration of a dedicated refugee sample into the 2022 UDHS survey design marks an important step in including displaced populations in national statistical systems—ensuring they are reflected in the data used for policy, planning, and investment decisions.
Data was collected between December 2022 and February 2023 across refugee settlements, covering key indicators including population characteristics, education, water and sanitation, maternal and child health, nutrition, and mortality.
Produced by the Uganda Bureau of Statistics in collaboration with UNFPA, UNHCR, the Economic Policy Research Centre, and the World Bank–UNHCR Joint Data Center on Forced Displacement, the report strengthens the national evidence base on the living conditions and health outcomes of refugees; supporting the design, monitoring, and improvement of health and social programs, in line with Uganda’s inclusive refugee policy framework and national development priorities.
The microdata underpinning this report is available upon request, supporting further analysis and wider use across research, policy, and operations.
