This report takes a closer look at refugee health, nutrition, and population data in Malawi, building on Dzaleka Refugee Camp’s inclusion in the 2024 Malawi Demographic and Health Survey.

Prepared jointly by Malawi’s National Statistical Office and UNHCR, and published with technical and financial support from the World Bank–UNHCR Joint Data Center on Forced Displacement, the report compares results from Dzaleka with the rest of Malawi.

The picture is mixed. Dzaleka records higher vaccination coverage, antenatal care, sanitation, and birth registration than the national average. Internet use and male literacy are also higher.

But pressures are clear. Basic water access is low, employment is limited, family planning needs are higher, and overcrowding is severe.

By building on refugee data from a national survey, the report provides a clearer basis for policy, planning and service delivery in Malawi.
